Since 1913, women in Sisterhoods have joined together to serve our congregations and communities, as well as creating a welcoming local arena for women to learn and share Jewish living with their families and themselves.
In our own Sisterhood, by working together, our women have brought the congregation together for such gatherings as the Chanukah pot luck dinner and the community Seder. We’ve raised money and made donations to help the Temple, such as our recent $3,000 to help pay down the mortgage, and to Temple members through our annual Mickie Scheff scholarship. Our women have reached out to the local community as well, with donations to Worcester County Gold, Inc, and Women Supporting Women (Nancy Murphy, of Women Supporting Women, spoke to us at our fall luncheon), and in January we will partner with Atlantic General Hospital again to hold our second health fair. And at a personal level, we TBY women have enriched our own lives as we learn and share together in the Rosh Hodesh group, or by working together in small committees.
However, that’s not all we do. Through affiliation with the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) our women accomplish mitzvot using the power of the group collective. We help support rabbinic education, for example, through the YES Fund (Youth, Education, and Special Projects). Collectively, we help change the social justice landscape through the resolutions we adopt at our conventions, such as defending against threats to reproductive rights. This December, at the WRJ Biennial Assembly in San Diego, our national WRJ leaders will be unveiling the new Torah: A women’s Commentary, which adds our women’s voice to our heritage and Torah and which will benefit all of us –men and women –for generations to come. To learn more about what we are doing at the national and international level, I invite you to go to the WRJ website, WomenofReformJudaism.org
In other words, we have a lot to be proud of. Each of us brings our individual talents; yet, when we pool our strengths there is no end to the good we can accomplish. We are truly stronger together.
