A woman of diverse talent, Cantorial Soloist Phyllis Alpern grew up in Amityville, NY and went to college at the University of Michigan. Although she intended studying music, she switched majors and achieved a degree in chemistry.
After marriage, she moved to the Chicago area, where she raised three sons and played clarinet in the North Shore Concert Band for over 25 years. She worked in real estate for 17 years in the Chicago area before moving to Northern Virginia, where she picked up her career for the next ten years. An ad in the local newspaper brought Phyllis to audition for Zemer Chai, the Jewish Chorus of Washington, with whom she has been singing for 15 years. Although she is currently living and working in real estate in Ocean Pines, Phyllis still sings with the chorus.
